#068: You're Not a Christian Because of Where You Were Born 🌎️
The most misunderstood label in the world has one biblical qualifier. Most people have never been taught what it actually is.

Last week: we explored the difference between a contract and a covenant, and why God’s promises don’t have exit clauses.
This week: The Definition Issue. Because before anything else - before kingdom business, before dominion, before purpose and prosperity - there is one question that determines everything.
Are you actually a Christian?
Not culturally. Not by association. Not by default. Biblically.
This is not a comfortable issue. It is a necessary one. Because a generation is living with enormous confidence in a label they inherited rather than a faith they possess. And the gap between those two things has eternal consequences.
⏳ THE SIGN
The Default Christian
65% of Americans identify as Christian. Regular church attendance sits around 20%. The gap between those two numbers represents tens of millions of people who claim the label without the life - not out of hypocrisy, but out of genuine confusion about what the label actually means.
Because the culture has spent generations defining Christian in ways the Bible never did.
Christian nation. Christian school. Christian family. Baptized as an infant. Goes to church at Christmas and Easter. Has good values. Tries to be kind. Believes in God generally.
None of these things appear in the biblical definition. Not one.
The Diagnosis: The most dangerous spiritual condition is not atheism. It is false assurance. The person who knows they don’t believe is closer to the kingdom than the person who is certain they do - based on criteria God never established. One is searching. The other has stopped searching because they think they already arrived.
📖 THE WORD
The One Biblical Qualifier
“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” - Romans 10:9 (KJV)
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” - John 1:12 (KJV)
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
One qualifier. Not ten. Not a checklist. One.
Believing that the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the complete, sufficient, final payment for your sin. Not a contribution toward it. Not the beginning of a process you complete with your behavior. The full payment. Finished. Nothing to add. Nothing to prove.
That belief - genuine, heart-level, staked-your-eternity-on-it belief - is what makes someone a Christian. Everything else is either the fruit of that belief or a substitute for it.
What Doesn’t Qualify:
Being born in a Christian nation doesn’t transfer faith any more than being born in a hospital makes you a doctor. Geography is not salvation.
Attending a Christian school means you received Christian education. It does not mean you received Christ. Information about Jesus is not the same as trust in Jesus.
Having a pastor for a parent means you were raised near the truth. Proximity to the truth is not the same as possessing it. You cannot inherit someone else’s faith any more than you can inherit someone else’s relationship.
Church attendance means you showed up to a building where the gospel was present. It does not mean the gospel took root in you. The seed and the soil are two different things.
The Wedding Ring Distinction:
Baptism is one of the most misunderstood elements of the Christian faith. It does not save. It never saved. It is not the qualifier.
Think of it this way: a wedding ring shows who you belong to. It does not make you belong to them. The marriage covenant is what creates the belonging. The ring is the public declaration of what already exists.
Baptism is the ring. Faith in Christ’s finished work is the covenant. You can wear the ring without the covenant. Millions do. But you cannot have the covenant without it eventually expressing itself - in baptism, in transformed living, in the fruit of a Spirit that actually dwells within you.
The ring matters. It just doesn’t make the marriage.
🌍 THE WITNESS
Two Kingdoms. One Choice.
Here is the framework that clarifies everything:
There are not many spiritual options. There are two kingdoms. That’s it.
The Kingdom of God: Freedom. Abundance. Life. Multiplication. The exponential math of a God who doesn’t add - He multiplies.
The Kingdom of Darkness: Slavery. Wages. Lack. Death. A system that pays you exactly what you earn - which, given the inherited nature of sin in every human being, is never enough and always falling short.
Romans 3:10 is unambiguous: there is none righteous. Not one. Every human being arrives in this world already in deficit, already in the wrong kingdom by default, already in need of a rescue they cannot perform for themselves.
Which is why Jesus said He came to seek and save the lost. Not to wait for the lost to find Him. To seek them. To interrupt them on their own path. To reach into the kingdom of darkness and pull out the ones who will receive what He’s offering.
Receiving vs. Achieving:
John 1:12 uses a specific word: received. Not earned. Not achieved. Not qualified for. Received.
Salvation is not a gift you give God. It is a gift God gives you. The direction of the exchange is everything. You bring nothing to it except the sin that made it necessary. He brings everything - His righteousness, His finished work, His resurrection life - and offers it freely to anyone who will receive it.
The moment you try to contribute to that exchange - to add your good works, your church attendance, your moral performance - you have rejected the gift and attempted to negotiate a transaction. And God does not negotiate salvation. He offers it. You receive it. Or you don’t.
The Rest:
Jesus described Himself as the Sabbath - the rest. Not a new set of requirements. Rest from the exhausting, impossible, always-falling-short work of trying to earn what was always meant to be received freely.
Come to Me, He said. All you who are weary and heavy laden. Not “come perform for Me.” Come rest. The work is finished. The payment is made. The only thing left is whether you will receive it or keep trying to earn something that was never for sale.
🔥 THE WORK
The Definition Audit
1. The Qualifier Check Strip away every cultural marker. No family, no church, no denomination, no nationality. On what basis are you a Christian? Can you name the moment - or the sustained conviction - that the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus became your personal trust rather than a general belief?
2. The Ring vs. Covenant Check Are you wearing the ring without the covenant? Baptized, confirmed, raised in church - but without the personal, staked-your-life-on-it trust in Christ’s finished work? If so, that’s not condemnation. That’s an invitation. The covenant is still available.
3. The Kingdom Inventory Which kingdom’s fruit is currently showing up in your life? Freedom or slavery. Abundance or lack. Life or the slow death of striving. The fruit tells you which root system is actually operating.
4. The Receiving Prayer If you have never specifically, personally received the gift - not just acknowledged the facts about it - today is the day. Not a prayer to earn anything. A prayer to receive what was already purchased.
“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner who cannot save myself. I believe You died, were buried, and rose again as the full payment for my sin. I receive that gift now. Nothing added. Nothing earned. Received. Amen.”
That’s it. That’s the qualifier. Everything else is the fruit of what just happened.

Forgive us for the false assurance. Forgive us for substituting proximity to the truth for possession of it.
We receive the gift today. Not because we earned it. Not because we deserve it. Because You offered it freely and we are finally holding out our hands.
Thank You for seeking us before we knew to look for You.

✝️ Final Word
The most dangerous spiritual position is not doubt. It is false assurance.
The person who knows they don’t believe is one honest conversation away from the kingdom. The person who is certain they believe - based on where they were born, who raised them, or which building they attended - may never have that conversation because they think it’s already settled.
It isn’t settled by geography. It isn’t settled by association. It isn’t settled by performance.
It is settled by one thing. Personal trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Received. Not earned. Not inherited. Received.
The label means nothing without the life. The life starts with receiving the gift.
